September 5, 2018 by Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

Two educational opportunities are returning to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Md., this September — Homeschool Day and Family Day. Guests are invited to experience CBMM’s waterfront campus at either or both as appropriate for their family.

Homeschool students and their adults are invited to CBMM’s fall Homeschool Day on Tuesday, Sept. 18, selecting either a morning or afternoon program to explore what it means to “follow the water” in every season on the Chesapeake through the eyes of a waterman.

Students will tong for oysters, pull crab pots, and climb into an oysterman’s bunk on a skipjack to learn about the seasonal harvests that have sustained life in the Chesapeake for generations. Families are encouraged to bring a bag lunch and picnic on campus. The Campus Challenge scavenger hunt will also be available for families to explore other museum highlights at their own pace. Individual families and co-op groups alike are welcome to attend.

The cost for Homeschool Day is $5 per registered student or chaperone. Accompanying younger siblings ages 5 and under are free. All participants must register in advance at cbmm.org/homeschoolday.

The second offering, on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 1–4pm, encourages families to get hands-on with CBMM’s campus at its biannual Family Day.

Participants will have a chance to explore CBMM through hands-on activities and family-friendly exhibits, perfect for a day of family fun. Families can a Quest Card and find their way around campus, trying their hand at caulking in the Shipyard like Frederick Douglass, walk on a giant map of the Chesapeake Bay, and climb to the top of the Hooper Strait Lighthouse.

All Family Day activities are included with regular CBMM admission; educators may register at cbmm.org/familyday for free family admission.

The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to preserving and exploring the history, environment, and culture of the entire Chesapeake Bay region, and making this resource available to all.

Every aspect of fulfilling this mission is driven by CBMM’s values of relevancy, authenticity, and stewardship, along with a commitment to providing engaging guest experiences and transformative educational programming, all while serving as a vital community partner.
