The Women & Girls Fund of the Mid-Shore will bring Rosalind Wiseman, best-selling author and media spokesperson on young people’s friendships, bullying, and the use of social media, to the Eastern Shore for an appearance at the Avalon Theatre on Wednesday, October 17 at 7:00pm. Internationally known for helping communities transform the way they understand youth culture and create communities where children can thrive, Wiseman’s presentations are engaging and inspire parents, young people, and educators to build healthy relationships with each other and create “cultures of dignity.”
With insight and humor, Wiseman offers parents, middle to high school-age youth, and educators positive ways to navigate the confusing world of adolescent culture. She explains how technology and social media influence our children’s self-esteem, friendships, and conflict with other people. Using current research, Wiseman provides suggestions for effective communication skills to help parents and educators avoid common communication
breakdowns and power struggles that can develop between children and adults.
Talli Oxnam, president of the Women & Girls Fund and mother of two teenagers, said she is looking forward to the Wiseman appearance because her topics are on the minds of so many parents of adolescent and teen children. “Finding ways to help young people build self-esteem, self-worth, and learn team-building skills are topics often discussed by our board, so bringing Ms. Wiseman to the Mid-Shore is great outreach.” Oxnam added, “Growing up in today’s culture is challenging – and in ways that today’s parents never faced themselves!”
Susan Dillon, a Women & Girls Fund board member, former trustee of The Gunston School, and past Talbot County Public Schools board member, is chairing the event. “As a parent, grandparent, and educator, I am passionate about the emotional well-being and development of self worth in young people. Rosalind Wiseman’s presentation provides us with information that helps our youth make strong decisions when confronted with social challenges and which
will strengthen their confidence.” She added, “I encourage all local parents and their middle – high school age children to join us on October 17.”
Following the program and Q&A session, Ms. Wiseman will sign books, which will be for sale at the event.
Proceeds from the program, eighth in the Women & Girls Fund’s Speakers Series, will support the Fund’s 2019 grants that benefit women and girls in the 5-county Mid-Shore region. Since 2003, the Women & Girls Fund has granted more than $553,000 to 84 local non-profits.
General admission tickets for the Wiseman program at the Avalon are $50 and tickets for students (under 21) are $25. Reservations may be made at www.womenandgirlsfund.org or by mailing a check, payable to the Women & Girls Fund, to 102 E. Dover St., Easton, MD 21601. For further information, call 410-770-8347.
