By way of newspaper ads and a public website, the Talbot County Democratic Central Committee has been monitoring the messages and activities of an independent political action committee, formed to promote the ouster of three current County Council members under the premise that “all three incumbents have advanced positions which are diametrically opposed to the interests and wishes of the citizens of Talbot County.”
Based on a recent email distributed to its supporters and followers, the “Bipartisan Coalition for New Council Leadership” appears to have now relinquished its objections to the block of members who voted together against a range of community interest measures, and has instead narrowed its sights to a single individual, the County Council president.
Although we may have fundamental and serious disagreements with the decisions and actions of the current council, neither the Talbot County Democratic Committee nor its five council candidates are involved in or in favor of coordinated campaigns against those in our community who have sought to serve the public good.
We are especially concerned about targeted attacks on a single individual, regardless of motivation or intended outcome. In a time of such political divisiveness on a national scale, perhaps the one thing local politics can and should preserve is a traditionally American sense of respect and fair play.
