The Move the Monument Coalition will hold a rally to focus on the destructive connection between lynching, Jim Crow, and the erection of the Confederate statue on Tuesday, October 27, at 6:00 p.m. on the Talbot County courthouse grounds in Easton.
Dr. Kirkland Hall, a former professor at University of Maryland Eastern Shore and a commissioner on the Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission, will discuss how the statue, erected in 1914, and the near-lynching of Isaiah Fountain on the Talbot County courthouse lawn five years later are related — and why the statue needs to be removed.
Other speakers will include Rose Potter, who served two terms as a commissioner for the town of Trappe and who ran for County Council in 2018 and Jazzmine Davis, a graduate of Easton High School and Stevenson University who is currently pursuing her Master’s degree from Salisbury University.
The rally is part of an ongoing commitment to gather on the nights the Talbot County Council meets to send the message that their 3-to-2 vote to leave the statue in place does not represent the sentiments of the majority of Talbot County’s citizens who will continue to push for its removal.
All are welcome to attend and asked to wear masks and socially distance.
