Paulette Tavormina: Seizing Beauty
through July 10, 2016
Curator-Led Tour: Wednesday, June 15, 12 noon
Paulette Tavormina’s photographs often recall the sumptuous detail of seventeenth century Old Master still life painters and serve as intensely personal interpretations of timeless, universal stories. Her meticulously orchestrated and beautifully lit photographs are boldly contemporary in their precision, capturing delphiniums, roses, lemons, figs, beetles, and porcelain bowls. Tavormina’s photographs are in museum, corporate, and private collections around the globe.Tavormina’s new book Paulette Tavormina: Seizing Beauty (The Monacelli Press, New York, 2016) features as an essay by Academy Art Museum Senior Curator Anke Van Wagenberg.
Peter Milton: Living Old Master
Through July 18, 2016
Peter Winslow Milton (1930) is a major force in the printmaking world. Milton conveys meaning through a contextual environment of people, places, and moments in time. A creator of black and white etchings and engravings that often display an extraordinary degree of photo-realistic detail placed in the service of a truly visionary aesthetic, his themes include architecture, history, myth, and memory, their intersections and hidden juxtapositions.
Brooke Rogers: In the Offing
Through June 12
Brooke Rogers: In the Offing will showcase the work of regional artist, Brooke Rogers, who grew up in Ocean City, MD. Living near the ocean is an important influence on his work, which has ranged from abstraction in a reductive vein, to a somewhat cartoony figuration. Minimalism and Pop Art have held sway over his work in a back-and-forth manner. Abstraction has won out in recent years.
Ernie Satchell: A Few of MY Favorite Things
June 17 – August 7, 2016
The exhibition features the ceramics of artist Ernest Satchell, a native of the Eastern Shore and retired professor from UMES. Under the tutelage of his mentor Jimmie Mosely and visiting professor Kenneth Beittel from Pennsylvania State University, he became proficient in throwing large vessels and found his true calling … ceramics.
Selections from the Grover Batts Collection
Through August 7
During his lifetime, Washington resident Grover Batts donated close to 200 works on paper to the Museum, thereby helping the collecting direction the Museum might take. Upon his death in July 2014, Batts left dozens of artworks to the Museum. His magnanimous gift includes works by renowned late 19th and 20th century American and European artists.
