In January of this year, Sean and Andrea Fine won the Academy Award® for Best Documentary Short Subject for their documentary Inocente, a coming of age story about 15-year-old artist, Inocente Izucar, who lived homeless on the streets of San Diego for nine years. Now 19, Inocente’s life has been transformed by her art and the incredible reception she has received by audiences around the world. On Friday, October 25, 7 p.m. at the Avalon Theatre, The Academy Art Museum is pleased to present a lecture, “Inocente: An Evening with Oscar,” by Oscar winning filmmakers Andrea and Sean Fine, along with Inocente Izucar.
Following the film’s premiere, Inocente Izucar has become an advocate for the homeless and an inspirational example about the power of art and how it can fuel young people to overcome adversity. The film is both a timeless story about the transformative power of art and a timely snapshot of the new face of homelessness in America, children. Neither sentimental nor sensational, it will immerse you in the very real, day-to-day existence of a young girl who is battling a war that we rarely see. The challenges are staggering, but the hope in Inocente’s story proves that the hand she has been dealt does not define her, her dreams do.
Prior to winning the Oscar this year, Andrea and Sean Fine were nominated for an Academy award for best documentary in 2008 for War/Dance. Their latest film, Life According to Sam, premiered at Sundance in January and will air on HBO in October 2013. The Museum will present a special screening of the Oscar winning film, Inocente, followed by an intimate question answer session with the filmmakers and Inocente.

On Saturday, October 26, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, the Museum will host“Inocente Free Family Art Workshop.” This family event will include face painting and colorful, spontaneous art projects structured around the Museum’s film showing ofInocente.
