Easton Police are investigating a serious automobile collision that occurred on Ocean Gateway (Rt. 50), at the intersection of Easton By-pass (southern end), on September 26, 2012, at approximately 7:55 am.

Preliminary investigation is revealing that Michael Ty Abbott (22 yoa / Cambridge Md), was operating a 2000 Jeep Wrangler, traveling west on Ocean Gateway (turning onto the spur) and approaching the intersection of Rt 50 to cross onto the Easton By-pass. Witnesses reported that the driver of the Jeep failed to either stop at the flashing red signal or solid red signal before attempting to cross Rt 50. While doing so, the Jeep was struck by a 1989 GMC 7500 Diesel farm truck which was towing a Case backhoe on a flatbed trailer. The GMC farm truck was operated by Parnell Ambrose Shortall (67 yoa / Cordova Md.).

Michael Abbott was flown by Maryland State Police to the University of Maryland-Shock Trauma. Parnell Shortall was transported to the Memorial Hospital at Easton, where he was treated and released.

Charges are pending until the conclusion of the investigation. Assistance was provided by the Maryland State Police and the State Highway Administration. Both directions remained closed until approximately 10:45 am. The eastbound lanes of Ocean Gateway (between Dutchmans Lane and the Easton By-pass intersection-southern end) remained closed until 12:35 pm., while investigators remained on the scene.
