Fall is here! Usually, this is time of the year when there is sausage grilling and people gathering in lawn chairs there is a football game involved, but not always. This October 26th, the wafting smoke from grills and families gathered on hay bales are fans celebrating the release of the 2014 Annual Chesapeake poster, Mallets Up! by Nancy Hammond.
Now in its 13th year, fans of renowned Chesapeake artist Nancy Hammond gather for the opportunity to purchase the exclusive Chesapeake poster.
This year’s event will take place on Saturday, October 26 at 10 a.m., at Nancy Hammond Editions Gallery, 102 Turpins Lane Centreville, Md. 21617.
The image is always kept secret until a preview is shown at Art at the Park Festival at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis the weekend before the release. Nancy Hammond gives her patrons this hint: “ This year’s poster, Mallets Up! tells a story !”
Opening day price on the day of the release is $75.00, all day, in-person sales only.
The next day, poster prices start at $200.00 and rise steadily until the signed limited edition of 500 is sold out. The last signed print in the edition sells for $3000. For more information, contact (410) 758-6612 or visit nancyhammondeditions.com or connect with the gallery on Facebook.
“When the event first started there were long fun nights of sleeping bags on the sidewalks and the tension of escalating prices on opening day,” says artist Nancy Hammond. “The leisurely Eastern Shore life style has prompted me to say ‘Enough lines!’ One price, all day on opening day,” she adds.
Last year, 450 Chesapeake lovers came from all over the country, including Alaska, California and New York to purchase Hammond’s 2013 poster. The gallery was electric with patrons chatting with Nancy Hammond and enjoying her latest work. “We were surprised!’ said gallery manager Kate Hammond ‘We only had 50 posters left for our phone in orders the next day. It was such a different atmosphere from past years. No one looked tired from having spent the night and people just wandered in and out of the gallery and just enjoyed themselves.”
“To get a look at an early peek at a framed Mallets Up, come to our booth at the big victorian porch at Quiet Waters’ Art @ the Park Festival in Annapolis the week before, October 19th and 20th.” says Hammond. “It’s fun to see all the exhibits outdoors.”
Nancy Hammond is an artist whose works are well known on both shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Hammond began her Chesapeake work with a series of silkscreen and giclee prints and has since designed scarves, jewelry, shirts, placemats, etched crystal and ties.
