Author Mark Bowden Comes to Oxford

April 8, 2018 by Oxford Community Center

Share

Distinguished author and speaker, Mark Bowden comes to the Oxford Community Center for an in-depth conversation led by Margaret L. Andersen, Rosenberg Professor Emerita of Sociology, University of Delaware and member of the Oxford Community Center Board of Trustees, Thursday, April 12th at 5:30pm. Doors open at 5:00pm with light refreshments offered.

Mark W. Bowden, is the best-selling author of Hue 1968, Black Hawk Down, The Finish: The Killing of Osama bin Laden, Best Game Ever, and many other books. Mark Bowden’s latest book, Hue 1968 is a New York Times Best Seller and has received numerous awards for outstanding journalism. The book provides a gripping narrative of the battle that was a turning point in the Vietnam War. Bowden’s compelling narrative and dramatic rendering of this battle—and the human lives that were caught up in it—is riveting, even for those who may not ordinarily read military history.

Called a “master of narrative journalism,” Mark Bowden gives us a meticulous and compelling account of a battle that changed the course of history. In this conversation, Andersen will be asking Bowden about his passion for military history, his craft for assembling the details of an extraordinary battle, and his reflections on how his books have so captured the public imagination.

Andersen herself an award winning author, is a leader in the study of sociology. Her keen sense of culture and history make for a promising conversation full of dynamic interaction. The audience is encouraged to participate in the conversation and book signings will be available at the conclusion of the event. Mystery Loves Company book seller arranged for Mark Bowden’s books to be on-site for purchase as well. “We are so fortunate to have such talented board members that expand the experience of a traditional speaker event. We couldn’t be more excited to have this caliber programming happening at the OCC, “said Joe Fischer, President of the Board of Trustees.

OCC offers free and low cost programs throughout the year thanks to the generous annual fund donors, attendees and sponsors. The money raised by the events goes directly towards serving our greater community. Mark Bowden’s stay was generously sponsored by Sandaway Waterfront Lodging Suites and Beach in Oxford and Thursday Nights @ the OCC speaker program is sponsored by Doc’s Sunset Grille. Having dinner on the water after the program is a wonderful way to end the evening in Oxford. www.facebook.com/docssunsetgrille
