The St. Michaels Lady Saints Varsity Basketball team started the season on December 6 against a strong Parkside High School team.  The Lady Saints handed first year Head Coach, Michael Turner class of 2008, his first loss of the season.  The final score was 81 to 6.

The Lady Saints played their second game of the season on December 10 at cross county rival Easton High School.  The Girls did show some improvement, but fell to the powerful Warriors 59 to 7.

On December 11, the Lady Saints fought hard and showed a great deal of improvement on both offense and defense but fell again with a score of 41 to 8 To Cambridge South Dorchester.

The Girls traveled to Snow Hill Thursday and the final score is not known at this writing.

The next home game for the Lady Saints is this coming Monday December 17 at 4PM against the powerhouse Queen Anne High School.

The ST Michaels Boys Varsity basketball team started the 2012-2013 season on Thursday December 6 against a very strong Parkside team.   The Saints were playing under a new Coach, Matt Sheridan who came to us from Queen Anne County.  The team struggled against a much stronger team and lost 119 to 25.

On Monday December 10, the Boys faced the cross county rival Easton Warriors.  Some improvement was shown but the final score was 83-19 in favor of the Warriors.

The Saints played their home opener against Cambridge South Dorchester on Tuesday and lost their third straight game 70 to 30. The high scorer for the Saints was  Jacob (JT) Tollett with 7 points.

Thursday, the Saints played very well against Snow Hill High School, showing substantial improvement on both Offense and Defense but fell again with a score of 54 to 40.   The high scorer for the Saints was TyRiece Wilson with 14 points.

The next game is Home against Queen Anne High School a very strong team who are looking forward to playing against their former coach.

The Saints gymnasium and cafeteria has been active the past two weeks with basketball and wrestling team practice.  All three teams have had numerous students at practice and off-site scrimmages have been played.  The coaches are evaluating the players and trying to determine their starting lineups.

Saints Wrestling Coach Sean Smith returns this year with a number of repeat players from last year and a few new players eager to fill the gaps in weight classes he had to deal with last year.  I hope to get to one of the practices this week to talk to Sean and get his opinion on the 2012-2013 season.  The first home match is scheduled on Wednesday, December the 12^th at five PM.  This is a tri-meet with Cambridge and Wicomico traveling to downtown St Michaels to challenge the Saints.

A new coach has been hired for the Saints boys’ basketball team. Matt Sheridan comes to us from Queen Anne High School where he had his hands in all three boys’ basketball teams; Varsity, Junior Varsity and Freshmen.   He was the head coach for the Varsity Team at Queen Anne and registered a winning season every year he coached.  We wish Matt and the boy’s varsity basketball team the best this year.  The Home opener is scheduled for Tuesday December 11 at 5:30 PM against Cambridge. There will not be a Junior Varsity basketball team this year.

Michael Turner, a Saint Michaels High School graduate, class of 2008, has been selected to head up the Girls basketball coaching responsibilities.  A number of new, young players including at least seven freshmen have gathered on the court to try out for the varsity team.    I counted 16 students on the court last week working with Michael and trying to secure a place on the starting lineup.    I think we only had seven players at the end of the season last year.  I wish Michael and his Assistant Coach Myra Flannary the very best for the 2012-2013 season.  The home opener for the girls is Tuesday December 11 at 4:00 PM.

The St Michaels Varsity Soccer Team participated in the second round of the Bayside Conference, East Regional Play-offs held at the St Michaels High School Sports Complex on Thursday Night, November 1st.  The Saints were hosts to the Trojans from Kent County High School.

This was a very close contest throughout the match as Kent County scored during the first half with a matching goal from the Saints to tie the score.  Kent County went ahead with a second goal midway through the second half only to have the Saints fight back and tie the score once again.  The tie lasted until the end of regulation play.

The overtime rules were explained to this announcer by the Officials as, two, ten minute sessions, followed by a shoot-out until a winner is determined.  The rules further allowed for the first goal to determine the winner as if it were sudden-death elimination.

The Saints held tough through most of the first overtime session only to fall victim to a hard charging offense by the Trojans.  The final score was Kent County three, St Michaels two.

The stands remained full until the Saints walked off the field in formation to thunderous applause from their parents, friends and local sports fans.  Several of the team members could be seen with a tear in their eye as the reality of a hard fought season had come to a close.

This announcer could say the following, only once, Hold Your Heads High, You Played a Great Season. You Done Good, Remember You are the SAINTS.

I take my hat off to Pat Hambleton in his first season as Head Coach of the Saints Varsity Soccer Team.  He brought the team a long way and deserves a lot of credit for his knowledge of the game and enthusiasm.

The St Michaels Saints Varsity Soccer Team completed the season with a six win, five loss and one tie record.   This was good enough for a number two ranking in the division.  The Saints secured a bye for the first round and will play the winner of the Snow Hill, Kent County game on Tuesday, October 30 – weather permitting.

The Saints opened this season with a three game home field advantage.  The home field edge didn’t help much as the Lady Saints lost three straight to Crisfield nine to one, Queen Annes three to one and Parkside two to one.

Their first away game found the Saints victorious over the North Caroline Eagles eight to zero on September 17.

On September 19, the Saints fell to the Kent County,m Trojans by a score of three to zero.

The Lady Saints were frustrated by the cross county rivals, the Easton Warriors, three to zero at home on September 24.

Another away game at the Washington  found the Saints once again in the winning column with a three to two victory over the Jaguars.

The Saints found their confidence on October 1^st and beat the Decatur Sea Hawks at home one to zero.

The Lady Saints traveled to Pokomoke with the Soccer team and brought home yet another mark in the lost column with a six to one loss to the Warriors.

On October 8^th  following senior night recognitions to the three graduating seniors, the Lady Saints were leading the North Dorchester Eagles three to one at half time, when this reported had to leave the game due to excessive cold.

The next result was bronchitis for the Voice of the Saints with more updates to come for the surging Lady Saints. Their record 4 wins 6 loses (Estimated)

Following the fourth game of the season the Saints held a 3 win 1 loss record.

On September 24^th the Saints traveled to Kent Island where the Buccaneers held the Saints to only one goal and came away with a three to one win, handing the Saints their second loss of the season.

Then on September 26^th, Easton High School crushed the Saints on their second of three road games, with their biggest loss of the season.  The Warriors managed a six to one final against the Saints and took away bragging rights for the Talbot County rivals.

On October first the Saints still hurting from the loss to the Warriors took their frustrations out on Cambridge South Dorchester with a convincing six to one win over the Vikings.  The Saints record at that time was four wins three loses.

On October 3^rd the Saints returned home to host the Lions from Queen Annes High School.  The final here was a two to one loss for the Saints.

The Saints then traveled all the way to Pocomoke High School on October 5^th and the best they could do was TIE the Warriors one to one.

Senior Night was held on October 8^th, during a cold rainy afternoon at the Saint Michaels Sports Complex.  The Saints after honoring their twelve graduating seniors managed to hold off the Bulldogs with a two to one win at the final whistle.  The record now stands at 5 wins 4 loses and one tie. There are two games remaining in the regular season.

The St Michaels High School Varsity Soccer team survived the long trip to Crisfield High School on Monday and came home with another win under their belt.  That win put the Saints undefeated at three wins and no losses.

On Wednesday, the Saints played a home match against The North Dorchester Eagles and lost a close match two to zero.  The overall record for the Saints, is three wins one loss.  The next three games on the schedule are away games for the Soccer team with Kent Island, Easton and Cambridge South Dorchester.  The next home game is October 3^rd verses Queen Anne at 5:30.

The St Michaels Saints Varsity Soccer team secured their second win in as many games to remain undefeated when they beat Mardella High School on Wednesday by a score of four to one.

Jarred Rowlands was in the prime position yesterday and scored three of the four Saints goals.   Pat Hambleton, the Saints Head Coach, was all smiles after the game as he discussed the winning effort with a number of the team members who remained at the field with family and friends to savor the victory.

The next match has the Saints traveling to Crisfield High School on Monday September 17^th.    The next home match is Wednesday, September 19th against North Dorchester with a start time of 5:30.

The St Michaels High School Varsity Field Hockey Team hosted the Parkside Rams in the second game of the season.   The much improved Lady Saints managed to keep the score close, however the final score was two to one in favor of the Rams.
