Shore United Bank has stepped up as the first corporate pledge, donating $5,000 towards the purchase of a 2018 Ford Wheelchair Van. The Chesapeake Center is located on Dover Street in Easton, Maryland. They serve over 100 individuals with disabilities in Talbot, Caroline, Queen Anne’s and Dorchester counties. Of the individuals they serve, 20% of them use a wheelchair, walker or cane and are unable to access public transportation. The Chesapeake Center provides transportation to and from the individual’s home and the Center and transports them to and from their jobs, community events and appointments such as, the doctor, pharmacy and social services. The current vans that the Chesapeake Center is using to transport individuals are unreliable, unsafe and unrepairable. Shore United Bank urges the community to support the Chesapeake Center’s goal of purchasing a new van to transport Center participants. Visit their website at ChesapeakeCenter.org to pledge.

“The Chesapeake Center is actively involved in the communities that it serves and they stand by their mission of expanding opportunities for adults with disabilities. It is our job to come together as a community and help local organizations when they are in need,” says Laura Heikes, Community and Government Relations Officer of Shore United Bank.
ABOUT CHESAPEAKE CENTER
The Chesapeake Center began operations over 50 years ago to provide education and employment to individuals with development disabilities. The Vocational School for the Retarded, Inc. in Easton, MD was founded in 1967 to provide training and employment for the handicapped. In 1969, the name was changed to Chesapeake Rehabilitation Center, Inc. and in 1985 to Chesapeake Center, Inc. Since that time, the Center has expanded its services and now is composed of five organizations. The Center now serves over 100 individuals with developmental disabilities and head injury from Talbot, Caroline, Queen Anne’s and Dorchester Counties. Much has changed over the years and today our mission is to assist adults with disabilities to reach their potential for independence by pursuing opportunities in housing, employment, natural supports, friendships and community activities.
