Visit Pickering Creek Audubon Center between October 4 and October 25 to walk among the winning bird photographs from the 2015 Audubon Photography Awards and learn more about local birdlife. The winning photos will be on view at the Center’s waterfront Monday through Friday from 9-5 and each Sunday in October from 11-3, including at the Center’s annual Harvest Hoedown on October 11. “We are honored to be selected to show these amazing images of birds to our community,” said Pickering Creek Director Mark Scallion.
Selected from more than 9,000 entries—submitted from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Canada—the winning photos were published in the May-June 2015 issue of Audubon magazine. A panel of five judges graded the images based on technical quality, originality, and artistic merit. Read more about the rest of the 2015 Audubon Photography Awards here.
The winning photos will also be displayed within an exhibit presented by our contest partner, Nature’s Best Photography, at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington.
Contest judges included Kenn Kaufman, Bird-guide author, Audubon field editor, Joel Sartore, Photographer, Audubon and National Geographic contributor and Steve Freligh: Co-publisher of Nature’s Best Photography.
The Audubon Photography Awards exhibition is the Center’s second significant art event this year, the Italian Muralist Hitnes visited the Center this August to paint two large murals. The first of Red winged Blackbirds in the marsh on the Center’s hog barn and the second on the Center’s boathouse with a beautiful image of the Green Heron. These murals are available for viewing seven days a week from dawn to dusk. Pickering Creek is open daily for hiking from dawn to dusk. There is an admission charge on October 11 from 11-4 for the Center’s Harvest Hoedown, the only 5 hours of the year the Center charges admission.
The National Audubon Society saves birds and their habitats throughout the Americas using science, advocacy, education, and on-the-ground conservation. Learn more at www.audubon.org and @audubonsociety.
