The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum has recently added Andrew Messick of Preston, Md., Greer Luce of Milford, N.J., Tatum Welsh of Chadds Ford, Pa., and Cassidy Mickelson of Tomahawk, Wi. as summer interns for the non-profit organization. Messick is working in the curatorial department, Luce in development and special events, Welsh in communications and special events, and Mickelson in education.
Messick is currently studying history and museum studies at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Messick will be helping with the management of acquisitions and collections inventory for CBMM, with a focus on cataloging yacht plans and preparing for the A Single Goal: The Art of Trumpy Yacht Buildingexhibition opening on August 6. Messick has always been connected to the Bay, starting with visits to CBMM and the 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse.
After many years of separation from the Chesapeake Bay and her relative’s sailboat in Annapolis, Luce is reconnecting with the Chesapeake as CBMM’s development and special events intern. Currently enrolled in the Cooperstown Graduate Program, Luce is focusing her internship on researching funding opportunities and outreach initiatives for the museum.
Welsh is an undergraduate at Virginia Tech studying public relations with two minors in event planning and marketing. Welsh is assisting in the planning and execution of special events as well as the museum’s communication efforts, with a focus on social media. Welsh’s connection with the Chesapeake began with countless weekend sailing trips aboard Tiburon, the sailboat that started her appreciation for all things maritime.
Mickelson, a Museum Studies student in the Cooperstown graduate program, will be assisting in the museum’s educational and outreach programs as well as working to create interactive, early-education activities for families with young children. The summer internship for Mickelson will be her first experience along the Chesapeake Bay, having grown up in the Midwest.
Over ten weeks, these interns will have numerous opportunities to observe and engage in field-related projects and behind-the-scenes operations, led by the museum’s professional staff.
