At HobbyTown USA of Easton, Md.’s April 23 model contest, Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum Maritime Model Guild member Ray Maule was recognized with three awards for his model of CBMM’s 1934 draketail Martha. Maule’s 42” radio-controlled model received a People’s Choice award from guests to the event, along with first place in the adult category for maritime models, and a Judge’s Award in recognition of the fine craftsmanship and scale used in creating the wooden model.
The model was designed in 2002 by Model Guild member Bill Price, who passed away in February, 2015. The project was recently picked back up by Maule, with the parts laser-cut for the model. The model can be seen at CBMM, with the Guild hoping to make the model kit available for purchase in the museum store.
Maule is a long-time member of CBMM’s Maritime Model Guild and Model Sailing Club, which meets each Monday at the museum. The group also hosts children’s model-making activities at CBMM’s signature events, along with monthly model skipjack races which begin this May 15, and the annual Maritime Model Expo, which is set for October 1-2, 2016.
Martha—known as a Hooper Island draketail, or dovetail because of her unique stern design—was built by Bronza Parks in 1934 and was used for crabbing, oystering, and pleasure. She was donated to CBMM in 1989 by Mr. and Mrs. Paul L. Warner and can now be seen dockside or out on the Miles River as part of the museum’s floating fleet and the largest collection of Chesapeake Bay watercraft in the world. CBMM is also building a 25’ Hooper Island draketail modeled after Martha in its Apprentice for a Day public boatbuilding program, with the finished boat available for purchase this summer.
