On Sunday, July 21 at 7:00 p.m., the Christ Church Easton Choir, guests and orchestra will present a concert entitled, A Baroque Festival under the direction of Wes Lockfaw.
The Choir, comprised of approximately forty singers from the mid, lower, and upper shore will feature two Baroque works.
The first, Cantata #93 by J. S. Bach, was premiered July 9, 1724. The cantatas comprise a significant portion of Bach’s choral music with almost 200 surviving. Cantata #93, having been composed for the fourth Sunday after Trinity Sunday, was intended for a particular season of the liturgical calendar as were all of the church cantatas. Vivaldi’s Gloria, RV 589 will also be performed. One of two surviving settings of the Gloria by the composer, it is the most popular and familiar of all his sacred music. It was likely written during his employment at the Italian Ospedale della Pietà and is reflective of the emerging style of the late Italian Baroque period.
The July 21st concert marks the second summer masterwork festival sponsored by the Christ Church Choir.
In addition to its selective repertoire used in services at Easton’s historic Christ Church, the choir has recently produced a number of choral masterwork recordings including Théodore Dubois’, The Seven Last Words of Christ and Gounod’s St. Cecilia Mass.
Next summer, the choir is scheduled to perform at Bruton Parish founded in 1674 and situated in the heart of the colonial historic district in Williamsburg, Virginia.
There is no charge for the performance and the public is invited to attend. Early arrival is recommended for best seating. An offering will be received during the concert, and a reception will follow the concert in the parish hall.
