As the frontman for Men at Work, Colin Hay’s distinctive vocals, inspired songwriting, and quirky, sardonic humor rode the cutting edge of the ‘80s New Wave scene, and you can hear him live this Thursday, April 26 at the Avalon Theatre.
Although he’s one of Australia’s best-known exports, Colin Hay was born in Kilwinning, Scotland, and grew up listening to the Beatles, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and The Who, among others. ” When I heard The Beatles and read (John Lennon’s) Spaniard in the Works, I knew this was a world I wanted to be part of,” Hay is quoted as saying. He taught himself to play guitar and, when the family moved to Melbourne in 1967, he found himself in the middle of a thriving musical community. He formed a rock band in 1979 called Men at Work; their first album, Business as Usual, released in 1981, won a Grammy, topped charts all over the world and ultimately sold more than 10 million copies. The band broke up in ’86; since then Hay has concentrated on a solo career, although he toured as Men at Work with another founding member, Greg Ham and backing musicians from 1996 to 2002.
