On Wednesday, March 24th at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Clara L. Small, Ph.D., Emerita Professor of History at Salisbury University, will discuss her book, coauthored with Teresa M. Neild, titled “They Wore Blue and Their Hearts Were Loyal: The United States Colored Troops of Dorchester County, Maryland.” Dr. Small’s latest book is “Compass Points: Profiles and Biographies of African Americans from the Delmarva Peninsula, Volume III.”
Dr. Small will talk about enslaved and free Blacks who served in the Civil War from the Eastern Shore, including Talbot County. She will address questions about the how, when, where and why they fought, how they were treated as Union soldiers, what they fought for and what their lives were like upon returning home.
Also discussed will be how understanding this history relates to the fight against racism and Confederate symbols in Talbot County today.
