Eco-Friendly First Thursdays at KI Farmers’ Market

June 11, 2012 by The Spy

Share

The  burgeoning  Kent Island Farmers’ Market, started in October of 2011 and running year round, carries a wide array of food: organic fruits and vegetables, herbs, flowers, seafood, cheeses, milk, yogurt and organic ice cream, herbal teas, fair trade locally roasted coffee, artisan breads and pastries, grass-fed beef pastured chicken and eggs as well as soy free eggs, pastured pork, (all meats are antibiotic and hormone free), native plants, organic lavender home and body products. The Christ Church members sell soup utilizing products purchased at the market.

The Spy received word from Diane Bedlin, founder and organizer of the market, that every first Thursday the market will focus on eco-friendly services, (think energy audits and solar energy products), as well as organic items.  Bedlin noted that she and the farmers have been, “..pleasantly surprised” by the educability of their customers, and that she thinks the addition of sustainable services will be well received.

Bedlin said that the market has become a real community event, with plenty of regulars as well as  a constant flow of new customers,  and that holding the event on Thursdays is a boon to farmers, as it  adds  additional income to what is normally an off day. So far there has been only one week, (in the middle of winter), where sales were really slow.

Bedlin remarked that the market has been, “…an interesting challenge,”  and that it is sorely needed in Kent Island. She loves working with and promoting the farmers; Facebook has been, “…a real godsend,”  in getting the word out.  Perhaps instead of stopping at the grocery store on your way home, you should consider dropping in at the KI Farmers’ Market instead. And don’t forget to say thank you to Bedlin for making it all happen, she’s  in the chair, waiting to greet you.
