Grab Your Snapshots & Selfies of Summers on the Chesapeake Bay

April 23, 2015 by Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

It’s time to gather your favorite personal photos from the last 50 summers on the Chesapeake Bay for an opportunity to take part in a new exhibition at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Called Snapshots to Selfies: 50 Years of Chesapeake Summers, photo submissions for this community-curated exhibition will be accepted beginning May 23, 2015 and continue through November 30, 2015, and is scheduled to open in 2016.

“Since the museum’s beginnings in 1965, the community has always been at the heart of everything we do,” said CBMM President Kristen Greenaway. “We want to celebrate that sense of community for our 50th anniversary in a meaningful way. This exhibition is a great way for people to share their favorite family or personal memories of time spent on the Chesapeake’s waters. And when the exhibition is complete, the photos will share an interwoven story of the meaningful ways people have connected with the Bay over these last 50 years.”

Snapshots to Selfies will be both an online and an on-campus exhibition of photos documenting people’s memories from the last 50 summers spent around the Chesapeake Bay. The exhibition will incorporate images from CBMM’s own collection, with a majority of the content coming from the community’s submissions.

“We’re looking for pictures of you—fishing, boating, swimming, or just enjoying a beautiful summer day on the Chesapeake with your friends and family,” said CBMM Director of Education Kate Livie. “The beautiful images in this exhibition won’t be landscapes or sunset shots. Instead, they’ll be all of us, making memories during the summertime in the Chesapeake.”

On May 23, CBMM will begin taking submissions for a new community curated exhibition, called Snapshots to Selfies: 50 Years of Chesapeake Summers, which will open in 2016. The exhibition will include photos like this one shown here, featuring a young boy with his rowboat in the 1980s, taken in St. Michaels in front of the 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse.

“With CBMM’s 50th anniversary coming up, we want to create an exhibition that’s all about our community,” continued Livie. “To collect and celebrate the moments we all love about living here. Crabs on 4th of July, a day at Betterton Beach, the log canoe race you almost won, maybe even a family picture taken at the top of our own Hooper Strait Lighthouse.”

To be considered for the exhibition, Snapshots to Selfies photo submissions must document a summer moment; be taken during or after 1965; feature the Chesapeake Bay or its tributaries; include at least one person in the photo; and can be taken by either an amateur or professional photographer. Individuals can submit up to three photos, which will require a brief explanation of the story behind the photos, as well as location and year taken.

With high-resolution digital or scanned photo submissions needed, CBMM is offering scanning opportunities of original photos at its major events, beginning May 23 at Party on the Point: Celebrating 50 Years on the Bay. For those unable to get to a CBMM festival for scanning, Pixel, Print, & Post of St. Michaels, Md. is offering special rates for exhibition submissions. All submissions can be uploaded online at www.cbmm.org/snapshots beginning May 23, 2015, when CBMM kicks off its year-long 50th anniversary celebration.

Party on the Point: Celebrating 50 Years on the Bay features the opening of a new exhibition, A Broad Reach: 50 Years of Collecting, plus boat rides, Rosie’s Tavern, regional foods, family activities, craft vendors, and more. Music begins at 10 a.m., with the XPDs performing their Motown sounds at the Tolchester Beach Bandstand from 1-5 p.m. For parking, free shuttle service and overflow parking will be available at St. Michaels Middle and High Schools.

The Crab Claw Restaurant and Patriot Cruises are also participating in the 50th anniversary celebrations: The Crab Claw celebrates its 50th anniversary with a sixties-themed party on Friday, May 22 and Patriot Cruises is offering special cocktail river cruises on Saturday and Sunday, May 23 & 24.

The festival is generously sponsored by Eastern Shore Tents & Events, with media sponsors including The Star Democrat, Chesapeake Bay Magazine, What’s Up? Media, 103.1 FM WRNR, and 96.7 WCEI and 94.3 WINX FM radio. Rosie’s Tavern is generously sponsored by the Lyon Distilling Company of St. Michaels.

The museum’s 50th anniversary corporate partners include PNC Financial Services Group, American Cruise Lines, Benson & Mangold, Chesapeake Shipbuilding, Easton Utilities, Fairfield Inn & Suites Easton, Graul’s Market, Guilford & Company, Hambleton Inn, Hawthorn – PNC Family Wealth, Higgins & Spencer, Patriot Cruises, Tidewater Inn, and The Vane Brothers Company.
