Habitat Choptank ReStore Hosting Design Challenge, Tickets on Sale

April 1, 2016 by Habitat for Humanity

The Habitat for Humanity Choptank ReStore is preparing for a showdown. On Saturday, April 23, 2016, Habitat Choptank will celebrate its one of a kind resale shop. Six teams competing in ReImagine ReStore will have 20 minutes to decorate 10’ x 12’ foot empty spaces using items gleaned from the ReStore’s unique and ever-changing inventory of donated furniture and home improvement items. Participating designers may accent their rooms by donating decorative items and furniture. At the end of the evening, items in the ‘rooms’ will be available for purchase. Proceeds from the event will benefit Habitat Choptank’s affordable home ownership program.

“This is our second year of hosting this fun and lively event,” says Bruce Wellington, co-chair of the event committee. “Last year we had a sell-out crowd and we expect to sell out again this year.”

ReImagine ReStore is a unique event. Attendees get to watch the transformation of an empty space into a thoughtfully designed space done in 20 minutes or less. The evening is also a great opportunity to feature what the ReStore does best: reusing, recycling and repurposing.

Tickets for the design challenge are $50 per person and go on sale in mid-March. Community members will be able to lend their support for individual teams in advance through online voting that begins March 24, 2016 at www.HabitatChoptank.org/Reimagine. Each team is paired with a realtor whose job it is to market and promote their team. The team with the most online votes in advance will be awarded the Community Choice Award, which includes additional recognition opportunities throughout the year.

“Guests on the 23rd will be in for quite a show as the design teams scramble to decorate their spaces live,” Wellington notes. After the spaces have been judged, the repurposed items in the spaces go up for sale to benefit Habitat Choptank.”

ReStores are resale outlets run by local Habitat affiliates that accept donated home improvement goods and furniture. These donated items are sold to the general public at a fraction of the retail price to help nonprofit Habitat affiliates fund the construction and rehab of homes within their communities. These homes are sold with an affordable mortgage to buyers who meet Habitat Choptank’s lending criteria.

Materials sold by the Habitat Choptank ReStore are donated by local retailers, contractors, churches and individuals in the community. The ReStore provides an environmentally and socially responsible way to keep good, reusable materials out of the waste stream and simultaneously provide funding for the Habitat mission in Dorchester and Talbot Counties.

Habitat Choptank’s ReStore is located at 8610 Commerce Drive and open to customers for shopping and to accept drop off donations Wednesday through Saturday each week.

Sponsorship opportunities are available for ReImagine ReStore. For more information about this event, visit www.habitatchoptank.org or call 410-476-3204.
