Habitat for Humanity Choptank recently celebrated the completion of its 57th home. The home was purchased by Lutitia King, a healthcare worker with Shore Health System and Talbot Hospice Foundation.
“Lutitia first applied for our program in 2005 but did not qualify due to debt issues,” explained Habitat Choptank executive director Nancy Andrew. “She reapplied last year with a sense of determination and a willingness to make some hard financial choices. Now, through their partnership with Habitat, she and her husband Arnold are debt-free and have purchased a home of their own with a mortgage they can afford.”
Since 1992, Habitat Choptank has made home ownership possible for 57 families and currently partners with five local families. These families are offered a “hand up” out of poverty housing. After completing “sweat equity” hours and pre-homeownership classes, these families will purchase homes that they helped construct and assume responsibility for repaying an interest-free Habitat mortgage. Habitat accepts applications for its home ownership program throughout the year.
