Letter to Editor: Constitution Celebration Day with Joseph Prudhomme

September 13, 2022 by Letter to Editor

Share

So many of us are energized by the constitutional protections in our life, whether it’s reproductive rights, gun safety, LGBTQ rights, or these days, a defense of our democracy and voting rights.

Let’s take a break from our campaigning for political candidates on September 17 and show up on the Talbot County courthouse lawn to recognize our indebtedness to the US Constitution.  Advocacy groups might consider wearing their reproductive rights, gun safety, LGBTQ, and voting rights paraphernalia, come together and celebrate our constitution.

This Celebrate the US Constitution event is co-sponsored by Joseph Prudhomme’s Institute for Religion, Politics and Culture at Washington College and the he Midshore Constitution Alliance.  He is an Easton resident and the author of an important new article supporting political liberalism as providing a culture conducive to the development of Christianity, countering the current messages of church paranoia against political liberalism (Psychol J Res Open, Vol 4(3):1-6, 2022).

This event is also sponsored by the Operation Frederick Douglass on the Hill organization, with promises to highlight the importance of the US Constitution in Frederick Douglass’s struggle for freedom.

And finally the event is sponsored by Clive Ewing’s Constitutional Alliance, a fund established through the MidShore Community Foundation.  Clive Ewing was one of the spokespersons for opposition to removing the Talbot Boys Statue.  I assume a diversity of points of view will be represented.

For information about the Celebrate the US Constitution event (Sept 17 11-2 on the Talbot County Courthouse Lawn), go on facebook to Operation Frederick Douglass on the Hill.

With regard to current issues regarding the Constitution, stay in touch with the Constitutional Accountability Project at theusconstitution.org.

Hope to see you there.

Your article on Constitution Day September 17, to be celebrated at the Talbot Courthouse is inaccurate and misleading. September 17 is a federally registered date that occurs every year to celebrate the signing of the US Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787.

The Constitution Alliance was formed by a bipartisan group to promote better education and awareness of the The Constitution as a “document” enabling freedom and equal opportunity for all. If you had asked, the organizers would have been glad to share our charter. It is simply to hand out 1000 pocket constitutions to the youth and citizens of Talbot County, and to announce a scholarship program for youth interested in careers in public service. That simple!!!

The Constitution Day Celebration Saturday is co-hosted by the Constitution Alliance-A MidShore Community Foundation Fund, Operation Frederick Douglass on the Hill, and Washington College- Institute for Religion, Politics, and Culture.

“Sponsors” include individual donors to the scholarship program, a few other local and preeminent businesses.

The largest miss by your “opinion”, is that this event is not meant and will not discuss issues and/or politics. This is a non-partisan, educational event focused more on youth and those wanting to learn more about the basic Constitution. Further more, as a non-profit, no politics or protesting of a specific view is encouraged or allowed to be promoted per our charter.

And finally, your mention of Clive Ewing and the Talbot Statute is totally off base and inaccurate. He is not a member of the Constitution Alliance organization.

Finally, all peaceful citizens of Talbot and the MidShore are welcomed to attend. We will give out Constitutions (until they run out), and free red, white and blue Rita’s ICE to youth while they last. “Fun, Education” not divisive politics!!!

Thank You Rick for this correction. This Maryland State Senate loser seems to constantly be seeking center stage, even after being told the voters don’t want her.

Thank you, Mr. Holeman for your taking the time to clear the record on this event.

Thank you for your very informative comment. First, and most importantly, that I mentioned my understanding of Clive Ewing’s involvement in the Constitution Alliance. The event website mentions as the contact person at the Constitution Alliance as Michelle Ewing, and perhaps my assumption that Clive Ewing is involved is incorrect.

I assumed most people are aware that Constitution Day is a nationally celebrated day and that the event is a locally organized celebration. I may be more aware than most since my daughter worked for several years at the Constitutional Accountability Project.

Thank you for clarifying the breadth of community involvement in the Celebrate the US Constitution event. The public information just mentioned the three sponsoring organizations.

The website indicates speakers so I assumed we would be hearing perhaps from Joseph Prudhomme from the sponsoring Institute for Religion, Politics and Culture at Washington College and others as well as events for young people.

I think we can all agree that the Constitution should be celebrated and more people should become familiar with it. The rights and freedoms it assures effect our lives, not just in the abstract, but in very concrete ways. It will be in the spirit of celebration that I, and as I have encouraged others, to be attending. I am particularly eager to hear from Operation Frederick Douglass on the Hill and the role the Constitution played in his fight for freedom. How fitting that the event should occur before his statue on our county courthouse lawn.

Thank you for the additional information.

Holly, Interesting that your partisan letter to the editor appears without any notice by the Talbot Spy of the Constitution Day celebration event on Sept. 17th. I wonder why? Guess that’s how you all roll.

Thanks for your comment. We can’t rely on any one source of information with so much going on. Attractions magazine for the month of September had the announcement. Also Operation Frederick Douglass on the Hill facebook page posted the event flyer on August 19th. For all of us interested in the legacy of Frederick Douglass, it’s an important site to follow.
