Letter to Editor: Harris has Betrayed our Constitution

January 14, 2021 by Letter to Editor

Share

Congressman Andy Harris betrayed our Constitution. Whether from complete ignorance or pandering self-interest I do not know. His vote to reject states’ certifications of votes of the Presidential election violated a principle of the Constitution that every high schooler should know, i.e., there are three separate independent branches of the government:  the President’s office, the Congress and the Courts  Allowing Congress to determine whether or not to accept the results of the votes in the  presidential election is akin to allowing  President Trump to be  judge and jury of his own impeachment trial – too much self-interest for a fair decision in either case.

Even Mr. Giuliani (before helping Mr. Trump incite the attack against the Capitol) recognized that determining whether there was fraud or irregularity in the voting process is a job for our courts.  Unfortunately, Mr. Giuliani, a seasoned trial attorney, nevertheless forgot that in our legal system courts require evidence of fraud, not just strong feelings about  the outcome.

I note that despite having more than two months after the election and huge resources of President Trump at his disposal,  despite President Trump’s numerous documented attempts to browbeat various Georgia officials into fabricating evidence of fraud, Mr. Giuliani could not produce any credible evidence of fraud in any  of the President’s numerous lawsuits to set aside the elections.

We still ask the same question most of the courts who heard the President’s lawsuits asked,  “Where’s the evidence, Mr. Giuliani?”

That Andy Harris ignored this lack of evidence to support his action and also failed to act in accordance with our Constitution when he voted not to accept the states’ vote tallies is shameful and reflects a lack of fitness for his office.

Before January 6, 2021, several of the Legislative bodies of the states had hearings regarding the validity of their elections. Videos of at least 2 of the hearings were available online (Georgia & Wisconsin). There was a large amount of evidence presented. I encourage anybody that has any questions to watch the recordings.

If you really want people to look at those videos, you could have provided better information or a link. Wait, don’t tell me. We’re going to see videos of boxes containing ballots being pulled out from under tables?

    Marcia,

I could not agree more. In addition, Mr. Harris lacked courage by not even showing up to the vote regarding impeachment. Besides rubber stamping most everything that President Trump wanted, Mr. Harris has done little for the constituents in his district. He should resign due to his failure to honor his oath to the Constitution. He rejected votes of states in which no fraud was found. I doubt he will have the courage to do that so our only recourse is to vote him out of office and elect a Congressperson who will work for his constituents rather than the political leader whom he follows.
