Letter to Editor: Why I’m Running for St. Michaels Commissioners

April 26, 2024 by Letter to Editor

Share

Over the years, I’ve observed significant transformations in our town. What was once celebrated as “quaint, cute, and cozy” has now succumbed to the expansive, impersonal forces of gentrification by short-sighted leadership. I want to tackle issues like excess parking down residential streets during festivals/events and install more trash cans and dog stations in areas
lacking them.

I’ve noticed a growing disconnect between the residents and the Commissioners, where the once “friendly” and “personal” nature of interactions has diminished. To bridge this gap, I propose introducing a comprehensive survey system integrated into the town’s official website. This approach is designed to garner vital public input on issues that matter, fostering a climate of collective understanding, transparency, and effective governance across all boards and commissions.

Concerning our town’s street lighting, the current approach is not only costly but also excessively bright and, for many, intrusive. The notion that our street lights must remain fully illuminated throughout the night is a policy that warrants re-evaluation. By adopting motion sensor technology for our streetlights, we stand to achieve significant savings, reduce our
environmental footprint, and alleviate the discomfort faced by residents living near these light sources. Implementing such systems would position us as pioneers in Maryland, potentially qualifying us for state grants aimed at supporting innovative and sustainable municipal projects.

This campaign is done in the name of my late mother, Commissioner Marie Wroten. She is the one who gave me the inspiration to become involved in local politics and strive to preserve our town’s identity.

Watching Harry Potter and reading this at the same time was utterly delightful.
I’m upfor it all of it.

My name is Brian Wroten by the way and this is from my press release. The last paragraph is cut off a bit… it’s supposed to say: “This campaign is done in the name of my late mother, Commissioner Marie Wroten. She is the one who gave me the inspiration to become involved in local politics and strive to preserve our town’s identity.” Thank you for reading!

You did omit your name! Put that in the first line next time and best wishes.

It’s on the header, footer, and banner of the press release. This is just the text body but will definitely do that in the future.

My name is on the header, footer, and banner of the press release. I wasn’t aware they would just be using the text body but will definitely do that in the future.

Good luck, Brian. Im not a St. Michaels resident but live nearby. I am dismayed by the proliferation of outdoor lighting. Im a dark sky advocate. The lights are bad, even deadly, for migrating birds. You also lose the rural, small town atmosphere when everything is lit up all night. Your ideas sound good to me.
