The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is now accepting reservations for its fall Lighthouse Overnight Adventures program. Under the guidance of a museum educator, youth groups and their chaperones can travel back in time to explore the life of a late-19th-century lighthouse keeper, all while spending the night in the historic 1879 Hooper Strait Lighthouse, which is now situated along the Miles River at CBMM in St. Michaels, Md.

The adventure program is offered on select Fridays and Saturdays, September and October, and again in the fall, with advance reservations needed. Groups of 12 to 18 children and their chaperones can participate in the adventure program.

Youth group members learn about the Chesapeake’s lighthouses.

The program shares the stories of the keepers who lived and worked in Chesapeake lighthouses. From lighthouse engineering to the daily task of maintaining the great lamp, the overnight adventure uses games, costumes, and historic object kits to explore the world of Bay lighthouses. The experience can also be used toward earning badges for Brownie, Junior and Cadette Girl Scouts, or just for fun among all groups and their chaperones.

The cost is $40 per person, with a 12-person minimum, 18-person maximum. The fee includes one overnight stay in the lighthouse with a dedicated museum facilitator, a drop-in river cruise aboard the 1920 buyboat Winnie Estelle (subject to seasonal availability), the cost of program activities, two days admission to the museum, and a souvenir patch. Dates are limited, with availability and more information at bit.ly/lighthouseovernight or by calling 410-745-4941.

Established in 1965, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is a world-class maritime museum dedicated to preserving and exploring the history, environment and people of the entire Chesapeake Bay, with the values of relevancy, authenticity, and stewardship guiding its mission. Serving nearly 70,000 guests each year, the museum’s campus includes a floating fleet of historic boats and 12 exhibition buildings, situated in a park-like waterfront setting along the Miles River and St. Michaels’ harbor.
