Women on the Mid-Shore are signing up fast for the Women & Girls Fund’s 4th Annual Golf Day with clinics in the morning and a tournament in the afternoon, at the Talbot Country Club on September 1st, 2015. The event is increasingly popular with golfers of all levels, who learn, mix, and mingle throughout the day.
The Women & Girls Fund was founded in 2002 to support non-profit organizations that seek to improve the quality of life of women and girls in the five counties on the Mid-Shore. The Fund has distributed grants totaling $418,355 to 70 organizations in the region since 2003.
Each year, event proceeds support the Women & Girls Fund’s special programs and grants. This year, a portion of the proceeds will support the purchase of equipment for the detection and treatment of breast disease at the Clark Comprehensive Breast Center at University of Maryland Shore Regional Health Center.
The CCBC is undergoing a major renovation that will make it possible for Eastern Shore residents to receive state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary treatment in one location.
“When we discovered that the Eastern Shore has a higher rate of breast cancer than any other region in Maryland, we made the commitment to step in to help,” said Alice Ryan, Women and Girls Fund’s founder. “Early detection saves lives.”
Golf Day will begin with morning clinics on putting, chipping, driving, and bunker shots given by Talbot Country Club’s Head PGA Golf Pro Marc Kimminau and three assistant golf professionals. Joan Heiss, a skilled golfer and rules expert, will lead a session on the rules of the game.
“The rules clinic is my favorite part of the event,” said Alice Ryan, who is co-chairing the event with board member Susie Dillon. “It never ceases to amaze me how you think you know the rules after playing for so long, but in a fun and informative way, she lets you know that you don’t.”
After lunch, the women will split into “foursomes” and play a 9-hole “scramble” tournament, where every golfer will play every shot, from tee to green, from her foursome’s “best ball” position.
Players of all levels, including beginners, are welcome. The fee for the event is $150 for the clinic, luncheon, golf cart and 9 holes of golf. For the luncheon and scramble tournament only, the cost is $100.
Sponsors for the Golf Clinic and Scramble will be recognized with signs on the course, banners at registration, and logos on luncheon tables. Sponsorships are available at the Par level ($150), Birdie level ($200), Eagle ($250) and Station level ($500).
Women can sign up by August 21st to play on their own or with a group by phoning 410-770-8347, emailing [email protected], or signing up online at www.womenandgirlsfund.org.
