A computerized numerically controlled (CNC) milling machine, donated by Chesapeake College to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s (CBMM) Model Guild more than 10 years ago, was recently moved from Centreville to the CBMM campus in St. Michaels, MD. The machine was stored off-site until adequate space was found at CBMM, and will now be used to produce key parts for Model Guild boatbuilding workshops and kits.
Moving the mill required jacking the four-ton machine onto heavy-duty casters before loading it by truck-crane onto a trailer. Upon arriving in St. Michaels, the mill was lifted over the historic Pinkett House to reach its final destination in the museum’s Lockwood building warehouse. To protect against moisture, a climate-controlled enclosure was built around the milling machine, which will be operated by trained Guild members.

CBMM staff and Model Guild members watch as the milling machine is carefully lifted over the Pinkett House on Mill St. in St. Michaels to the entrance of the museum’s Lockwood building warehouse.
The museum’s Model Guild welcomes new members of all skill levels to participate in the Guild, use its facilities, and trade model building experience with museum visitors. The Guild is hosting a basic model boatbuilding workshop at CBMM on March 31 and April 1, with participants 12 years of age and older welcomed.
Call 410-745-2916 before March 26 to pre-register for the workshop. For more information about CBMM’s Model Guild, contact Bob Mason at 410-745-3266 or [email protected]
