Outdoor Explore​rs Family Program Begins Feb. 1 at Adkins

Explore the great outdoors! Outdoor Explorers, a new program series offered by Adkins Arboretum, provides wonderful opportunities for children and families to engage with nature.

All ages are welcome for these family-friendly Sunday-afternoon programs led by Youth Program Coordinator Jenny Houghton. All sessions run from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Programs include:

Reading the Landscape
Sun., Feb. 1
Cultivate your tracking skills on a winter hike along the Arboretum’s scenic woodland paths. Many animals remain active through the winter. Uncover their stories by examining tracks, scat and other signs.

Talking Bones
Sun., March 1
Fascinated by forensics? Love a good mystery? Learn to unravel the life stories of native animals through their bones. Examine cranial structures to determine an animal’s environmental lifestyle…and its identity.

Tree Rings 102
Sun., March 29
Tree rings reveal a world of information beyond the age of the tree. Explore the science of dendrochronology to determine the events that shaped a tree’s life and the world around it.

Wilderness Survival
Sun., May 3
Move over, Bear Grylls! Why watch examples of wilderness survival on television when you can gain hands-on survival skills at Adkins Arboretum? Activities will include water collection and purification, starting a fire with flint, foraging, and shelter-building.

Advance registration is required. The fee per program is $5/members, $7/non-members for individuals, or $15/members, $20/non-members for families.
