The St Michaels Saints boy’s basketball team hosted Colonel Richardson High School this evening in a two game match.
The Varsity team played a solid game on offense and defense but could not keep the Colonels from finding the basket. The final score was Colonel Richardson 93 St Michaels 68.
The St Michaels, Junior Varsity, boy’s basketball team played an outstanding game all night with every member of the team participating in the first victory of the season. The JV boy’s have had that never-say-die look in their eyes since losing a two point squeaker to the North Caroline Bulldogs last week.
Tonight a very determined JV team took on the Colonel Richardson Colonels, and hung tough all night. At one point the Saints were up by 14 points, but the lead vanished in the fourth quarter and the Saints were behind by three points with less than one minute in regulation play. From out of nowhere Rahkeem Beck mastered a three point shot from downtown St Michaels to tie the score at 48 and send the game in to overtime.
The overtime rules stipulate that four minutes are put on the clock and play resumes. The lead went back and forth several times during the overtime period and when the Colonel’s missed a shot that bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded the score was Saints 55 Colonel’s 54.
Pandemonium erupted in the St Michaels Gym as the JV Boy’s Basketball team beat the odds and was victorious for the first time this season. I am not sure of the official tally but I believe the Saints JV record this season is One Win and Fifteen Loses. Way to go SAINTS.
There are several players that deserve some press.
Riley Halterman was outstanding under the basket securing the rebounds numerous times to get the ball back in Saints position.
J V Lewis played a strong determined game on both offense and defense. He is a very talented player and proved he can hustle through four quarters of basketball.
Tyrice Wilson had a good eye for the basket and found it enough times to score 18 points.
Rahkeem Beck took top honors by scoring a game high 19 points to lead the Saints to victory. Rahkeem sunk two, three point baskets, but the three point shot under extreme pressure with less than one minute on the clock to tie the game and force overtime, will be one he will remember throughout his career.
When I finally cornered the JV Coach Marcus Palmer and asked him for a quote, all he could say was “It was a great team effort”. I agree, Coach, and tip my hat to the entire St Michaels JV Basketball team. Congratulations.
