University of Maryland Shore Medical Centers at Dorchester and Easton have achieved Magnet® redesignation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Both UM Shore Regional Health medical centers were first awarded Magnet Recognition® status in 2009.
Magnet Recognition® is an organizational credential granted to exceptional health care organizations that meet specific standards set forth by the ANCC. To achieve Magnet Recognition®, an organization must meet standards in quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. This designation, which must be reapplied for every four years if an organization wishes to maintain the status, is the ultimate distinction for high quality nursing care and a primary source of best nursing practices worldwide. Only 7% of all registered hospitals in the United States have achieved Magnet Recognition® status; there are only 401 Magnet® designated hospitals worldwide. UM Shore Medical Centers at Dorchester and Easton are two of the six hospitals in the State of Maryland that are Magnet® designated.
To obtain redesignation, UM Shore Regional Health was tasked with completing an extensive application and documentation process followed by a three-day site visit conducted by a team of appraisers from ANCC, which concluded in early April.

University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown has begun the journey to Magnet Designation® and will be included in the reapplication process that concludes in 2018.
