The St. Michaels Art League has announced the winners of the 2022 Martha Hudson Awards for excellence in watercolor.
Martha Hudson was well-known in the community for her watercolors depicting scenes of Eastern Shore Life. As a young art student, Martha was given a grant to use for the continuation of her studies. In return, she generously left an endowment for an award to be given each year by the St. Michaels Art League to deserving watercolor artists.
The judge for this year’s exhibit was Joan Machinchick, an award-winning watercolorist, calligrapher and graphic designer. Joan’s background is in book design and illustration, with a BFA, with honors, in graphic design from Maryland Institute College of Art. During her professional career, she provided graphic design, illustration and calligraphy for a variety of prominent clients. She now devotes her time to watercolor painting, calligraphy and the design of artists’ books. She has exhibited her work in many solo and shared exhibits in the Maryland, Virginia and DC areas.
First place was awarded to Deborah McFarlin for her painting “Island Nest,” Second Place went to Scott Sullivan for “St. Michaels Harbor,” and third place to Jan Perdue for “Gourmet Garlic.”
Honorable mentions went to Joan Cranor for “Sagging In” and to Sandy Alanko for “Tranquility.”
This program is funded in part by a grant from the Talbot County Arts Council with revenues provided by the Maryland State Arts Council. For more information about the St. Michaels Art League visit Smartleague.org.
