Spring arrives even earlier than winter on the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra calendar as three world-class soloists are featured in an “Appalachian Spring” concert culminating in Aaron Copland’s title masterpiece.
The program, premiering Thursday, Nov. 7, at the Church of God in Easton, opens with Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Cellos in G minor showcasing rising star Steven Chen and the MSO’s own globetrotting virtuoso Jacques-Pierre Malan. Dvorak’s Serenade for Strings in E major brings the concert’s first half to a dramatic conclusion. Following intermission, Haydn’s Piano Concert No. 11 in D major brings soloist Didier Castell-Jacomin to center stage. MSO music director Julien Benichou says, “Didier brings to Haydn not only lightness and expression, but also depth of color.” The finale is performed in the 1944 chamber orchestra arrangement of which Copland wrote late in his career and life, “I have come to think that the original instrumentation has a clarity and is closer to my original conception than the more opulent orchestrated version.”
Concert time is 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Church of God, 1009 N. Washington St., Easton. The MSO also performs the program at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at Ocean View Church of Christ, 55 West Ave., Ocean View, DE, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, Community Church, Route 589 and Race Track Road, Ocean Pines. Tickets: $45, 888-846-8600, or here.
