St. Michaels Art League Offers Advanced Colored Pencil Workshop

December 11, 2014 by St. Michaels Art League

Share

Colored pencil is a wonderfully usable fine art medium. This two day workshop will focus on advanced color pencil techniques in the production of a botanical piece. The course will highlight color theory, mastering layering techniques for rich color, and will emphasize grissaile technique, composition, color blending and detailing. Students will complete individual projects produced on mylar. Pre-requisite: students must have completed Introduction to Color Pencil.

Talbot County artist Lee D’Zmura is an award winning botanical artist whose experience in landscape architecture enriches her watercolors. With a focus on historic landscape preservation, her professional projects include the Jefferson Memorial and Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, DC and Ann-Marie Sculpture Garden in Solomons, MD.   The transition from landscape documentation and design to botanical painting was a natural extension of her knowledge and love of plants. Her watercolors are an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of the individual specimen with botanical accuracy. The fine detail in her paintings is in part the result of years of technical drawing.

D’Zmura received her certificate in Botanical Art from the Brookside Gardens School of Botanical Art and Illustration where she subsequently taught the advanced watercolor classes. She has also studied with several master botanical artists and is a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and the Botanical Art Society of the National Capital. Her work is in collections throughout the country and has been published in journals and books on botanical art including American Botanical Paintings: Native Plants of the Mid Atlantic. Most recently her work was on exhibit at the United States Botanic Gardens. Lee maintains a studio in St. Michaels where she draws inspiration from her neighbors’ gardens and the wildflowers of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
