May 21, 2015 by The Spy

The Exploratory Committee for Helping Citizens Age in Place in Talbot County is a new coalition of community service organizations, elder care providers, experts on aging, and concerned citizens, who have joined forces to explore introducing the national “Village Concept” to Talbot County. A Village is a network of neighbors helping neighbors by providing support services and the social and educational programs needed to help older adults stay in their homes and remain active in their communities for as long as possible.

Lee Newcomb, member of the Exploratory Committee for Helping Citizens Age in Place in Talbot County, addresses interested citizens at the Easton Fire Department at one of the committee’s community meetings throughout the county to determine if the “Village Concept” can help fill any senior care service gaps that may exist in Talbot County.

The committee is reaching out to citizens and village leaders, asking them to participate in a community focus group to determine if the Village Concept can help fill any senior care service gaps that may exist in Talbot County. This focus group includes discussions and a survey that will help the committee gather information on existing elder-care services, determine the demand for these services, evaluate cost factors, and identify local volunteers who may be interested in helping to provide services to Talbot County’s older adults.

The committee has held two community meetings, one in St. Michaels and one in Easton, in the last week to help gather information and feedback. Two additional meetings will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at the Cordova Volunteer Fire Department from both 2 to 3:30 p.m. and 6:30- 8 p.m. and on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at Trappe Volunteer Fire Department from both 2- 3:30 p.m. and 6:30- 8 p.m.

Citizens wishing to attend any of these meetings are encouraged to RSVP to Lee Lynch Newcomb at Talbot County Department of Social Services at 410-770-8741 or [email protected] .
