The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is offering guests the chance to learn about traditional iron casting in St. Michaels, Md., this March through its Apprentice for a Day Shipyard Programs.
The public is first invited to create their own iron-cast molds during a Sip & Scratch event from 5:30–8:30pm on Friday, March 15, in CBMM’s Van Lennep Auditorium. A limited number of participants can enjoy two adult beverages while designing their molds, which will then be turned into a work of art during an iron pour demonstration held on Saturday, March 16. The cost for the Sip & Scratch event is $30 per participant, and registration is required to cbmm.org/sipscratch. Materials, drinks, and light hors d’oeuvres will be provided.
The Saturday, March 16, Iron Pour Demonstration will be held from 10am–4pm in CBMM’s Shipyard and is open to the general public, not just those who participated in the Sip & Scratch event. Attendees will have the opportunity to see a cupola furnace in action while watching presenters pour molten iron into molds made by students, staff, and the public. Registration is not required for this demonstration, and attendance is free with general CBMM admission.
CBMM’s Apprentice for a Day Shipyard Programs take place year-round, offering demonstrations, workshops, intensives with visiting master craftsmen, on-the-water experiences, and customized programming. Programs take place on weekends and select weekdays, and include a variety of programs for every interest and age. To find one that’s right for you, visit cbmm.org/shipyardprograms.
