Pickering Creek Audubon Center recently launched the new year of volunteerism at the Center with its annual Pancakes at Pickering. Audubon staff and volunteers gathered over warm breakfast for camaraderie and conversation before the start of the workday. Staffer Nico Sarbanes, back from his winter break, expertly flipped hotcakes that were devoured by the hungry crew. For the volunteers it was an opportunity to catch up with those they had not seen, learn more about ongoing work at the Center, and get the scoop on upcoming volunteer activities. Audubon staff members were able to meet or catch up with both new and long-term volunteers and share stories about their work at the Center. “Volunteers play an important role in carrying out the Center’s mission,” says Director Mark Scallion, “they serve as Trustees, guides for public hikes, and fill many critical behind the scenes roles like mowing, gardening and carpentry.”
Audubon Educator Harrison Jackson highlighted the Center’s work with our current school programs, particularly with sixth grade students who were the majority of the participants on 129 school field trip groups at Pickering Creek this past fall. Harrison thanked volunteers for their service and reminded those present that “ you are part of the team that makes our education and outreach work successful through your care of the Center’s trails, gardens and other site amenities that make Pickering welcoming and accessible to all visitors.”
Samantha Pitts, the volunteer coordinator at the Center, invited volunteers to join in on upcoming volunteer events like Saturday Service days scheduled during the third weekend each month through May. Pickering Creek is actively seeking more volunteers to assist with those days and more. Volunteers at Pancakes at Pickering Creek were encouraged to bring a friend when they come to upcoming events this season. If you are interested in volunteering, you can learn more and sign up for those volunteer events online at Pickering Creek Audubon Centers website under the “get involved” tab on the home page.
The Center’s next big work day is Spring Trail Day on Saturday, March 21, 2020 from 9:00am to noon. Volunteers will prepare woodland trails for visitors and spring school field trips. It is a great day to come out with family and friends with tasks appropriate for all ages. The staff and volunteer team will be mulching the Farm to Bay trail, clearing debris off of the wooden bridges along the trail tidying up and replacing borders.
