Warning; Burglaries And Copper Theft On The Rise

November 8, 2012 by Spy Desk

Police wish to warn all property owners of vacant properties that there is an increase in burglaries and copper thefts occurring in Easton.

Since mid October, Easton Police have investigated (10) cases involving person/s entering vacant properties to steal copper pipes, coils, and other scrap metals. These metals have been taken from crawl spaces, basements, and HVAC units. These ten offenses have accounted for over $20,000.00 in stolen and damaged property.

Vacant properties include homes for sale, homes in renovation, foreclosures, and rental properties in between renters.

The following suggestions may prevent property owners from becoming victims.

Crime Prevention for vacant/unoccupied properties:

  • Do not remove curtain or shades. Keep them closed with a light on. Otherwise, criminals can easily see that the home is vacant.
  • If renovating or waiting to be rented or sold, keep all doors, windows, and crawl spaces secured. Additionally, visit the property frequently enough (and at different times) to show that the property is active.
  •  Be mindful that a “For Sale” sign is also advertising that the property is vacant. This can also include any legal notices attached to the property.
  • Entrust neighbors to watch the property, in addition to your own efforts.
  • If you suspect that you have been a victim of a burglary and/or theft, contact the police immediately.
