This Sunday, May 1 at 4:00 p.m., Christ Church Easton will present “Music for a Grand Occasion” featuring Christopher Sala on trumpet and Wes Lockfaw at the organ. The concert will include works by J. S. Bach, Vivaldi, Handel, Green, Stanley, and a host of others using a variety of trumpets and the four manual Rodgers Organ at Christ Church. One particular selection, a lovely setting of Ave Maria, is arranged by Sala. The concert is the last in the 2015-2016 series and is open to the public. A free will offering will be received.
Guest Trumpeter, Christopher Sala grew up in Clifton Park, New York and Wilbraham, Massachusetts. In 1994 he earned a Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music in music education and trumpet performance. Two years later, he earned a Master of Music from The Florida State University in trumpet performance, where he was a member of the faculty brass quintet. He is the first place winner of the 1996 International Trumpet Guild Solo Competition, the 1997 ITG Mock Orchestra Competition, and the second place winner of the 1997 National Trumpet Competition. He has also been a semi-finalist in the Brandt Competition in Russia and the Maurice André Competition in Paris. He toured the United States and Costa Rica with Atlantic Brass and Epic Brass, playing recitals and as featured guest artists with symphony orchestras. Currently, he is assistant principal trumpet in the United States Navy Band. He is a frequent soloist with the concert band, and is the leader of the Navy Band Brass Quintet. In addition he was recently appointed principal trumpet in the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, where he has been a member since 2002.
Wes Lockfaw, organist, is no stranger to Easton audiences. He has been the music director at Easton’s Christ Church since 2009, and is the Artistic Director for The Easton Choral Arts Society. In 2014, he was instrumental in securing a charter for the Mid-Shore Maryland Chapter of the American Guild of Organists for which he currently serves as dean of the chapter. He holds memberships in the Handbell Ringers of America, the American Choral Directors’ Association, the American Guild of Organists, and the Royal School of Church Music.
