St. John’s Church and the first Miles River Bridge. This pictured bridge was built in 1858 by Capt. Travers of Taylor’s Island, Dorchester County for $7,000. It was 1480 yards long and 16 feet wide. The draw opening was 30 feet. The privately owned bridge was a toll bridge with the rates established by the Board of Directors . In 1877 the toll receipts were $1190. The rates were: a single horse and carriage 5 cents each way, double horse and carriage 10 cents, foot passengers 6 cents each way and a horse and rider 10 cents each way! On September 10, 1878 the bridge was bought by the County for $3,350 and it became a toll free bridge.
