Footner’s Classic “Rivers of the Eastern Shore” at the Miles River Yacht Club

February 20, 2024 by Spy Desk

The public is invited to a waterfront dinner and talk about a classic of Maryland’s social history, Rivers of the Eastern Shore, by Hulbert Footner at the Miles River Yacht Club on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 6 p.m. The dinner is $30 and must be reserved no later than March 11 by calling 410-745-9511, ext. 1.

The speakers are Dennis Forney, a Bozman resident and Publisher Emeritus of the Cape Gazette in Lewes, Delaware, and Karen Footner, a Neavitt resident and the author’s granddaughter.

Originally published in 1944 as a part of the prestigious Rivers of America series, Footner explores the Shore’s 17 rivers and writes with vivid glowing prose about its people, customs, towns, and houses; he speaks of its role in American history, and its politics and economics.   His appreciation for Maryland’s unique character is evident in his depictions of the state’s distinctive charm and atmosphere.

The Honorable John C. North wrote, “Rivers of the Eastern Shore is a wondrous gem of a book with a beckoning but far too modest title. Its scope is far broader than a contemplation of waterways. The entire book is replete with obscure, fascinating passages of erudition and thoughtful observation. It is more than worthy of the much-misused term ‘classic.’”
