The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science in Cambridge, locally known as the Horn Point Laboratory, hosted attendees from the 2024 Izaak Walton League Convention, held at the Hyatt Recency in Cambridge on July 15-17.
Professor Jamie Pierson of HPL (and president of the Mid-Shore Chapter of IWLA), along with two graduate students who were recent recipients of scholarships from the Mid-Shore Chapter of the IWLA, PhD candidate Miss Catherine Fitzgerald and Masters’ student Mr. Michael Kalinowski, conducted the tour of the HPL’s facility. They acquainted the attendees with the lab’s mission and provided a comprehensive tour of the oyster program. Approximately 35 Ikes from the convention attended
Miss Fitzgerald focuses on the genetic analysis of zooplankton and larval fish populations in the Choptank River. She expects to complete her studies and dissertation in the spring of 2026. Mr. Kalinowski is studying microbes in the sediment that conduct electricity. Professor Pierson is a zooplankton ecologist interested in how plankton communities respond to climate change and other stressors, and he is Miss—Fitzgerald’s advisor.
