Fans of the Jayhawks and Bright Eyes should check out the quartet, Frontier Ruckus, playing at the NightCat in Easton on Tuesday, June 21.
When you hear the band name Frontier Ruckus, you might picture an outfit playing in the middle of an episode of “Deadwood” — rough-hewn and distinctly Western in nature, with traditional instruments pushing the music along. You’d be partly right.
Frontier Ruckus was born amidst the urban sprawl of the Rust Belt in Detroit. However, new-grass flair is front and center in the music.
“…delicate, finger-picked banjos, aching, oaky violin and the haunting voice of frontman Matthew Milia, who conjures what might happen had Neutral Milk Hotel’s Jeff Mangum been raised in a log cabin. Their songs are full of rich, rural details: frozen lakes, swaying trees, highway lights glowing in the deep night. Add to the mix baleful brass and trembling percussion, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for Gothic Americana.” – Rolling Stone
