The Maryland Humanities Council (MHC) elected four new members to its Board of Directors at its October meeting held in Columbia. New members include a preeminent scholar, an artist and architect, an Associate Professor and author, and an award-winning journalist and producer. Board members’ primary responsibilities include strategic planning, approving and monitoring the organization’s programs and services, ensuring effective fiscal management, fundraising, selecting and orienting new Board members, allocating grant funds, fundraising, and promoting MHC’s activities. Members serve without pay and are eligible to serve up to two three-year terms.
New Board Members include Alex Castro, artist and architect. Designer of the American Visionary Art Museum and the Charles Theatre in Baltimore, he is presently designing the expansion of the Senator Theater, Baltimore’s iconic art deco movie house. Mr. Castro has designed over 50 exhibitions for national and international museums and more than 100 books for museums and trade publishers. He has served as exhibition and museum architecture consultant in the Middle East, Africa, and the Caribbean, as well as nationally.
Among his recent projects is the design of In Full Glory Reflected, a 272-page book commissioned by the State of Maryland in commemoration of the War of 1812. Mr. Castro’s work as an artist is in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, The Baltimore Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, and private collections. He is a member of the board of Yaddo, and is a member of the Maryland Commission on Public Art. He is currently adjunct professor of art at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, where he resides with his wife, Kelly.
