Wades Point Inn Hosts Launch Party For Book About St. Michaels

Wades Point Inn will host a launch party for the book We Are One (The War of 1812: The Battles for St. Michaels) on July 27, 2013, from 5-7:30 p.m. We are One book cover

Published by the Commissioners of St. Michaels as part of the upcoming Bicentennial commemoration, the 60-page book is a collection of essays and images of St. Michaels and its role in the War of 1812. It contains facts and lore about the two attempted British invasions in August 1813.

“In my opinion, this is the definitive work on the battles of St. Michaels,” says editor Walda DuPriest-Brandt, who assembled a team of local and national writers and photographers to work on the project. “It’s quite remarkable that our local militias were able to stop the greatest naval force in the world at that time. Imagine the bravery it must have taken. This is something for which the town and its people should be very proud.”

Not only will the public get its first look at the book on July 27, several of the book’s contributors will be on hand to discuss their work. Speakers include Dr. Gene Allen Smith, professor of history at the U.S. Naval Academy, Dr. William Dudley, former Director of History for the Navy Department, Pete Lesher, chief curator of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, and  James Dawson of the Unicorn Bookstore in Trappe.

Wades Point Inn  is the perfect place to host such an event. The home sustained heavy damage during the second British landing and failed attempt at invading St. Michaels. Noted shipwright Thomas Kemp, builder of the fastest clipper ships on the Chesapeake, bought and restored the three-story Georgian mansion after the War. Among the guestrooms is the Lookout Room with steps leading to a tower where Kemp stood to watch his ships pass on the Bay.

Tickets for the book launch party are $25 per person, with advance registration required. The price includes cocktails, light appetizers provided by The Grille St. Michaels, and a copy of the book. Call Wades Point Inn at (410) 745-2500 for reservations.
