Downes Curtis (1911-1996) ,an Oxford native, was 17 years old when he became an apprentice to English Sailmaker David Pritchard in 1928. When Mr. Pritchard died Downes and his brother Albert became premier sail makers and sail repairers for the Chesapeake Bay region. Facts: “The Baltimore Sun” Dec. 30, 1996 Downes Curtis obituary.
