Beginning this April, The Mental Health Association in Talbot County is proud to announce a free speaker series designed for the community. The informative presentations, which respond to issues which affect the community, will be held at the Talbot County Public Library from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. in the first-floor large meeting room. No reservation is necessary. Come as you are and bring your questions for the knowledgeable
On April 25, 2016, Real Talk about Heroin and Addiction is the topic of discussion by Daniel Brannon, the President, and CEO of Right Turn-IMPA IMPACT. In 2015, Danny was personally asked by Governor Hogan to speak at the Governor’s press conference announcing the Heroin and Opioid Task Force. Mr. Brannon is a recipient of the National Person Prize for Higher Education. He holds a degree in Addictions Counseling. Danny works passionately helping addicts, alcoholics and people suffering from substance abuse issues to find solutions to their problems.
On May 2, 2016, Suicide Risk Assessment: Why Youth Typically Experience Suicidal Thoughts & The Signs and Symptoms of Depression is the topic of discussion by Dr. Rob Schmidt, Ed. D, LCPN, NCC, and Behavioral Specialist of Talbot County Public Schools. Dr. Schmidt is a national speaker on mental health and suicide prevention programs and has published chapters in several books including How Children Become Violent and Youth Violence. He has led studies on youth suicide, school mental health, and was a contributor to Preventing Suicide: A Toolkit for High Schools. He is the author of the Risk Identification Suicide Kit assessment for youth and a trainer for the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program. Dr. Schmidt worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital as school mental health clinician and provided coverage to the Hopkins Psychiatric Children’s Center. Dr. Schmidt is a board member of the Mental Health Association in Talbot County.
This fall, on September 8th, the presentation will be by Diane Lane, the Executive Director of The Chesapeake Voyagers, Inc. who will speak on WRAP: Wellness Recovery Action Plan. Chesapeake Voyagers is a wellness and recovery center providing peer support to those who are experiencing mental health and addiction. Ms. Lane formerly worked as a Family Navigator for the Maryland Coalition of Families for Children’s Mental Health. Her passion for advocacy and her experience with her child who struggles with mental health and a developmental disability led her to that role. She has many connections throughout the state in both the child & adolescent and the adult mental health professional communities. Diane currently serves on the Board of Directors for On Our Own of Maryland and Main Street Housing. She was previously a board member of The Mental Health Association in Talbot County and Mid-Shore Mental Health Systems.
