This August, The Green Phoenix Gallery is pleased to feature the colorful, finely crafted works of fiber artist Wende Woodham. Her unique “woven pictures” are constructed from a large repertoire of ribbons and trims collected from throughout the United States, Europe, and the Orient, with some designed by the artist herself. From them, Woodham creates cheerful one-of-a-kind Chesapeake Bay images of flora, fauna and landscapes.
“Since my tree-climbing tomboy days, ribbons have woven their way throughout my world. My discovery of a robin’s nest cleverly entwined with brand new hair ribbons— the likes of which had mysteriously disappeared from my sister’s bedroom window ledge— opened the door to my lifelong passion for weaving and design. Fascinated with the beautiful effects achieved through the use of unusual color and texture combinations, I create my own designs in a line of small home decorator pieces. Every twist of ribbon yields new and exciting possibilities!”
Much of her artistry was put on hold while Woodham enjoyed a successful military career, but after retiring from the US Army in 1999, Wende was determined to turn her love for designing fiber art into more than just a daydream. Today, in her home studio on Kent Island, she creates beautifully woven ribbon and fiber art pieces which include wall décor and pendants.
Gallery owner Andi Tassencourt invites the public to The Green Phoenix on First Friday, August 4, from 5 to 8 pm, to meet Woodham, see how she weaves her works;and to enjoy some wine, yummy finger foods, good company and conversation. Says Tassencourt, “By layering the inspiring qualities of fiber art, as embodied by Wende’s work, into our eclectic mix of fine, artisanal crafts by local artists, Fair Trade gifts from around the world, and oil paintings by Diane DuBois Mullaly, we offer an environment with a full range of creative arts for the community to enjoy!”
And FRIVOLOUS FIBERS Yarn Boutique, located inside The Green Phoenix Gallery, adds even more interest, featuring a new collection of its own line of gorgeous, hand-spun, and hand-dyed yarns.
