Easton’s Allegro Academy presents Arias and Art Songs, a free concert to take place on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 4 p.m.. The concert will be held at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 315 Goldsborough Street, Easton MD. The performers featured at the March 11 concert — Damian Savarino, Tara Bowers Savarino, and Laura Petravage — represent the some of the finest international artists and are professors of vocal music at Messiah College, Grantham, PA.
Damian Savarino, Bass, is one of the most sought-after performers in opera and on the concert stage, who has performed recitals in Berlin, Germany, Katerini, Greece, Ravanusa, and Sicily. He has appeared throughout the U.S. performing in Die Zauberflöte, Le nozze di Figaro, Rigoletto, La Bohème, Carmen, Cosí Fan Tutte, Tosca, and La Traviata. Savarino has performed in venues such as the Rose Theater at Lincoln Center, NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, and Alice Tully Hall. His concert performances include Mozart’s Requiem with Manhattan Concert Productions in Carnegie Hall, as well as with the Greenwich Choral Society, and Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, also at Carnegie Hall. Dr. Savarino performed the role of Dr. Gibbs in Ned Rorem’s opera Our Town for its Washington DC premiere. Other performances of Damian Savarino’s include Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs, and Schubert’s Mass in G. Damian Savarino received his Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance degree from Catholic University of America, he is also a graduate of Ithaca College and the New England Conservatory of Music.
Tara Bowers Savarino, Soprano, is a graduate of Tufts University and the New England Conservatory in Boston where she earned degrees in English and Vocal Performance, respectively. She has performed leading roles in Cosi Fan Tutte, The Mikado, Hansel and Gretel, The Medium, Kismet, Le Petit Duc and Utopia Limited. She made her Lincoln Center debut in 2002 in The Children’s Requiem, a new musical based on the history of youth violence in New York City. Her solo work includes Carmina Burana with the Tufts University Chorale and Orchestra under the direction of Daniel Pinkham. She also completed an Opera and Cultural Studies Program in Rome, Italy, and in June 2007 she made her European debut performing with her husband, Damian Savarino in Ravanusa, Sicily.
Laura M. Petravage is a choral conductor and mezzo-soprano, professor of vocal arts at Millersville University and Messiah College, and Artistic Director of Ensemble du Pain Musical, a vocal chamber ensemble in the Harrisburg area. Dr. Petravage is an active performer for Polish cultural organizations whose prizes include second place winner for the 2015 Marcella Kochańska Sembrich Vocal Competition, an event sponsored by the American Council for Polish Culture; and finalist for the same award in 2014. Dr. Petravage performed at the Kosciuszko Foundation in February 2016 and sang for the Polish American Congress in November 2014. Her March 11 performance at Trinity Cathedral will feature a set of Polish songs by Chopin and Praderewski. Dr. Petravage has sung for the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Art Song Preservation Society of New York, and was the winner of the 2013 George Mason University Concerto Competition. Dr. Petravage received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from George Mason University where her studies focused on the re-establishment of the French aesthetic at the beginning of the twentieth century and the choral music of Francis Poulenc. She received her Masters of Music from the Eastman School of Music, and holds Bachelor of Arts degree in vocal performance with a minor in French language studies from American University.
Arias and Art Songs will be accompanied by Allegro Academy’s Artistic Director, Amy Morgan. The mission of the Allegro Academy, operating on the campus of Trinity Cathedral, is to offer exceptional music education and performance experiences to the greater Talbot County Area, and to make these offerings affordable to all. Mrs. Morgan is a graduate of Salisbury University with a degree in piano performance, and Messiah College with a Masters degree in choral conducting. She is also the Music Director of Trinity Cathedral.
