The fourth Saturday in April is when Oxford celebrates the history and community of this village on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. With five locations in town—Causeway Park, Town Park, Morris Street, Market Street and Ferry Dock—fun can be found everywhere. Rain or shine, Oxford Day is a great event.
If you are new to Oxford Day, then clear your calendar. You won’t want to miss a thing! Games, prizes, music, crafts and bake sales entertain and tempt all ages. For children, there is a moon bounce and giant air slide as well as pirates, games and prizes. Smokey Bear and the Maryland State Police K-9 Unit also make an appearance. The Plant Sale at Holy Trinity Church is the place to get your spring garden looking gorgeous.
Talbot Hospice’s Memorial Walk begins the day at 8am. The walk leaves from Oxford Community Center and goes down Morris Street to West Strand. Registering in advance at TalbotHospice.org is recommended but you can also register at OCC on Saturday morning.
This year, Oxford celebrates World Tai Chi Day with a tai chi demonstration by its local tai chi arts society. Free tee shirts will be available for the first twenty participants. Talbot Humane’s Dog Walk begins at the Causeway with a blessing by Holy Trinity’s Rev. Kevin Cross and continues to Town Park where many will participate in a dog show. Register in advance on Talbot Humane’s web site.
The main event of the day is a parade on Morris Street with a marching band, floats, and outrageous cars and trucks throwing candy to parade-goers. Complete your Oxford Day experience at the Ferry Dock with a free ride on the skipjack Nathan of Dorchester. The historic Oxford Bellevue ferry will be running too and offers free walk-on rides to the first 100 passengers.
Town Park is filled with all sorts of delicious treats—brown bag breakfast and coffee offered by Oxford Community Center, a White Elephant and Bake Sale by United Methodist Church, and crab soup from Robert Morris Inn. Waters Church offers up a mouth-watering barbecue and fish fry at its location on Market Street. At Causeway Park, the Fire Department grills hot dogs and burgers and Scottish Highland Creamery dishes out ice cream from its mobile cart. Lunch is also served up in Town Park by Doc’s Sunset Grill and at Causeway Park by Latitude 38.
Businesses on Morris Street celebrate with special events—opening day at the Oxford Museum where you can explore Oxford’s history; a raffle at The Treasure Chest; and Wine & Wings tastings at the Oxford Market. On Market Street, find some hidden treasures at the Oxford Library’s paperback book sale.
Pope’s Tavern offers a jazz lunch, and Bird Dog & the Road Kings return for an afternoon concert in Town Park. Finish the day with a Great Gospel Concert at Waters Church.
If you’ve been to Oxford Day then you already have the fourth Saturday in April marked on your calendar and are eagerly awaiting the day. Arrive early since Morris Street will close at 10am to all but parade participants. Volunteers will direct you to the parking lot and courtesy shuttles will take you into town. Handicap parking is available at the Oxford Post Office on Wilson Street.
