The Democratic Forum of Talbot County will host a presentation on immigration by Matthew Peters, Executive Director of the Chesapeake Multicultural Resource Center. This will take place on Tuesday, June 11 at 26 W. Dover St., Easton, 7-8:30PM, and is free and open to the public,
Approximately 15 percent of Maryland’s population is foreign born, and our Eastern Shore economy is heavily dependent upon foreign labor. The dynamics of cross-cultural assimilation can be challenging, and Peters has put his experience living in rural Guatemala for over a decade to good use by working directly with our Eastern Shore immigrant community since 2012.
His presentation will focus upon Central Americans, the single largest sector of Maryland’s immigrant population, and ChesMRC’s mission to assist people from different cultures in becoming successful and engaged members of our Mid-Shore communities. These efforts include programs addressing education, employment, housing, transportation, and legal issues. The Chesapeake Multicultural Resource Center has also joined with local agencies, schools, and churches to address the challenges faced by our immigrant community.
Questions will be welcomed following the presentation. “Understand the story behind the migration of hundreds of thousands from Central America over the past 15 years since the end of the 36-year civil war, and how that story has progressed since 2010 with the establishment of narco-states throughout Central America and into America, and how their plight and story continues today,” Peters has suggested, and, “See this is an issue of massive displacement, and of an extremely vulnerable population that is looking to America now more than ever to stand up for those who are powerless, to fight for those that live in constant fear, and to give voice to the voiceless.”
This presentation is free and open to the public. For more information go to www.demforum.com.
